Constructivism in Psychology: Personal Construct Psychology, Radical Constructivism, and Social Constructionism

چکیده

The constructivist psychologies theorize about and investigate how human beings create systems for meaningfully understanding their worlds and experiences. I refer to these “constructivisms” using the plural because there are many varieties of constructivism (Neimeyer & Raskin, 2001) and they have been described in various constellations (Botella, 1995; Chiari & Nuzzo, 1996a, 1996b; Lyddon, 1995; Mahoney, 1988, 1991, 1995; Rosen, 1996; Sexton, 1997). Depending upon how one chooses to carve out categories of constructivism, one finds differing areas of commonality and divergence. Regardless, the constructivist psychologies have grown immensely in quantity and influence over the past fifty years, originating in a variety of theoretical and research venues that have slowly developed greater contact with each other and with psychology at large. In fact, as the 21 Century begins, constructivist psychologists find themselves standing at the crossroads, ready to make their mark on the broader discipline of psychology. However, despite their steadily growing influence, constructivist psychologies have not evolved into a single, coherent, theoretically consistent orientation. Given numerous theoretical differences, there is not even agreement among constructivist psychologists that arriving at a singularly recognizable orientation is desirable. Nevertheless, some constructivist psychologists’ efforts to form a loosely confederated constructivist theoretical orientation have made inroads into mainstream psychology, as evidenced by the

RESPONSES AND REPLIES Strong Constructivism — from a Sociologist's Point of View: A Personal Addendum to Sismondo's Paper

A Reconciliation for Constructivism? As a labelled constructivist, I turned with pleasure to Sismondo's paper, 1 expecting it to instruct me in what I was labelled for, and hoping to learn something about constructivism's variants and wrinkles. I was not disappointed. The field badly needed a first review and Sismondo's is a good one; it is informative about various brands of constructivism, an...

Identifying the existence of barriers to students’ learning from assessment results

Constructivism is the dominant paradigm in educational psychology at present. According to this theory, learning is an active process of sense-making, which occurs in the mind of the learner as she or he attempts to construct a meaningful representation of new information (Phillips 1995). As a result, instruction aimed at transmitting (intact) a knowledge structure from the instructor to the st...

Piaget ’ s Constructivism , Papert ’ s Constructionism : What ’ s the difference ? Edith Ackermann

What is the difference between Piaget's constructivism and Papert’s “constructionism”? Beyond the mere play on the words, I think the distinction holds, and that integrating both views can enrich our understanding of how people learn and grow. Piaget’s constructivism offers a window into what children are interested in, and able to achieve, at different stages of their development. The theory d...
